I’ve got the Blues

The color blue is commonly known as a symbol of strength, trust, dependability and wealth.

Sounds good, right?

Don’t go too blue– It’s easy to pick a color and then find it in every shade for your room to introduce a blue overload. While we do love color on color mixes, blue is a great color to mix up with white, yellow or gray.

Pairing it with light colors will transform your room to look airy, light and even bring that ‘beach’ aspect in your house.

What color do you use to decorate your room?

Giving Beds to Children in Our Community

A Hope to Dream was started by Ashley Furniture Homestore in 2010 with one goal in mind: to provide less fortunate children in our community with a  bed so that they can have a good night of sleep.

Ashley Furniture Homestores in Ca (the 17 homestores) has taken up the challenge, and to date has given over 2,000 beds to children in our communities.

We were fortunate enough to get to meet with one of the families who recently received some beds- and were overjoyed to hear how much a simple bed can mean to someone.

Mother of five energetic and bubbly children, Mischelae, shared their story with us:

“We applied for the Hope to Dream program because my children didn’t have any beds. We were living at my mom’s house when there was a electrical fire- it started in my room and burned down the entire house, all of her antiques,  photos, our furniture… everything. Her church helped her find a smaller place, but my children and I were put into a shelter. Finally, someone offered to let me move into this apartment. It’s small, with only 2 bedrooms, but we are blessed to have it.

Before we received the beds from Ashley Furniture, we were given bunk beds from a neighbor- but we didn’t have any mattresses so they couldn’t even use them. I had two of my children sharing a bed with me, and we would push the couches together to use as a bed for my other children.”

Dayja, age 15 and the oldest of the 5 children shares that she is so thankful for the new beds. “They are so soft and I’m glad to finally have my own bed. Usually my siblings wake up a lot during the night, but last night they slept all night on their new beds and didn’t even wake up when I left for school! That’s never happened before.” Now Dayja can get a full night of sleep to help her continue her success in school; despite their family’s troubles, she proudly holds a 4.2 GPA at her high school, where she takes all honors classes.

Mischelae shares. “We’re close to moving into an apartment with one extra bedroom so my children can have more space. We are so blessed for getting these new beds.”

Two of her children were at an afterschool tutoring program and were not pictured, but Mischelae stated that they were so excited and thankful for their new beds, “Especially since the beds came on the birthday of my 8 year old. She was jumping up and down because she got a great birthday present.”

Hearing stories like this make us so grateful to be a part of a community that gives.

Hunger Is Not Just a 3rd World Issue

Ask a pageant contestant what she would wish for if she had a magic genie and she might answer “To have world peace, and end world hunger.”

Great answer.

From the Article “US Hunger Rate Triple That in China”

Unfortunately, there is no magic genie and world hunger is definitely a daunting issue. We often think of “hunger problems” and picture innocent children in a 3rd world country going to sleep with no dinner, but it hits so much closer to home than just that.

So close to home in fact, that it’s affecting our communities.  1 in 6 people face hunger every single day in America. And according to research conducted by Feeding America, California has more food insecure counties than any other state in the U.S (more on that article here).

Ashley Furniture Homestores started the Furnish Your Home and Feed From Your Heart Campaign to help stop hunger in our communities.

Helping end this problem is simple and affordable. In fact, every $1 donated can help feed up to 7 people.

How can you help?

During the month of February, Ashley Furniture Homestore is partnering with local food banks. If you come into one of our homestores (from the 17 listed in California) and donate to this cause, you will receive a gift card to our homestores.

Donate $25 and receive a $50 gift card to Ashley Furniture Homestores. Donate $50 and receive a $100 gift card.

Last year, we raised $45,139!

But this year, we have set our goals much higher- we would like to be able to donate $102,000 to local food banks.

Help us reach our goal by visiting our homestores and donating a small amount to make a big difference.

ImageSnap a photo!! Show your friends that you are helping end hunger by taking a selfie with your gift card, upload it to instagram and put #EndHungerWithAshley in your caption.

Why you love your furniture but hate your room

If you fell in love with the furniture set at the store but bring it home and find that it’s just too much for your room, don’t fret- the problem can be something as simple as  your  color scheme.

For example, it’s easy to find a big, dark brown, bedroom set and then be drawn to dark colors that look great with it, but you might want to try some light colors instead.

Why? If you have light colors on your bed, walls, floor etc. then it will draw the eye toward the main pieces of the furniture. It will give a direct “landing” mark for your eyes to know where to rest.

Here’s a great example of bold furniture and how a soft colors used to complement the pieces.

Path Included

Notice that they didn’t skimp on color- there is a variation of pinks, tans, and even a subtle green surrounding the bed and  dressers. They are using accent colors to do just that-accent the room, not overpower the room.

So if you’re feeling like your room is a mess of color, it might be because you aren’t giving your eyes a rest! Lighten up some colors to create that focal point that you need in every room.

Give it a try, swap some of your dark accessories for a lighter pallet and see if it makes a difference.

Soften your Hardwood floors.

We love hardwood floors. They’re easier to keep clean than carpet, they’re durable,  and of course, they make any house look amazing.

However, there are downsides to the beloved hardwood floor- and one of the problems is in the name itself. They’re hard.

Along with giving off a look of sophistication and adding structural strength to your home, hardwood floors can also give off the feeling of ‘cold’ and ‘uncomfortable’ (your feet can probably vouch for that when you just get out of bed on a cold morning without slippers). While entertaining guests, ‘cold’ and ‘uncomfortable’ are definitely not that impressions you want to leave. But there is an easy fix-

area rugs.

If you’ve ever been to one of our homestores, you might have noticed that our furniture displays always include an area rug. Why? Because we understand that a simple rug can unify your room– it shows that this cluster of furniture is intended and goes together.

So take a look at these photos:

Notice anything?

Area Rugs.

We really do take them for granted, but imagine any of these rooms without one- suddenly there’s an empty and incomplete feeling, missing that simple touch of coziness and warmth.

So how do you pick the right rug? There’s a few things to focus on before running out and buying the first eye-catching rug you see

Location: Where will you be adding this rug? Smaller rugs are generally seen in kitchens, bathrooms, or smaller rooms. Larger rugs will typically be seen in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Traffic: Is this a high traffic area? Say the rug will be used in your living room and you entertain often, pick a dark colored rug or even one with bold patterns so they do not get noticeably dirty. If it’s in the fancy dining room you eat at for Thanksgiving only, don’t be afraid to try a lighter color.

Color: Use this opportunity to accent select colors in your room, if your room is mostly in one color, use this opportunity to add a pop to your room. Use your rug to enhance or complement the room, not to overpower the room.

Check out a few examples, put together by our Visual Merchandising Lead-

Each rug is used to enhance the furniture, it goes well with each piece without taking your eye off of the furniture you love so much.
